This course is designed to provide an overview of cognitive behavioral therapy as it applies to common concerns experienced by adult cancer survivors. From prevention of disease for high-risk individuals to the management of side and late effects of cancer treatment, this course covers the entire cancer treatment continuum.

This workshop is highly interactive and participants should plan to engage in discussions and role plays throughout the program.

By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

1) Describe 3 essential components of cognitive behavioral therapy
2) Identify elements of the biopsychosocial model in cancer
3) Identify 3 modifiable health behaviors for cancer prevention/prevention of cancer recurrence
4) List 3 common cancer treatment side effects that can benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy techniques
5) Identify 2 ways in which traditional cognitive behavioral therapy may require modification in a cancer population
6) Describe 3 examples of cultural factors that may mediate an individual's experience of cancer and cancer treatment
7) Apply the biopsychosocial model to case studies in cancer
8) Demonstrate effective use of cognitive restructuring for cancer-related automatic thoughts
9) Demonstrate effective application of behavioral activation for cancer-related mood concerns and side effects
10) Demonstrate effective application of progressive muscle relaxation for cancer-related anxiety and side effects

About the instructor:

Dr. Jennifer Kilkus is a board certified clinical health psychologist and assistant professor at Yale University School of Medicine with a specialization in oncology.

She has expertise in evidence-based interventions for the physical and psychological consequences of chronic and terminal illness, with a specialization in the area of oncology.

She has spent her career developing programs in behavioral health with a focus on psycho-oncology and women’s health.

She is a licensed psychologist in the state of Connecticut in the United States.
